Holy Week celebraciones a Cerro de la Cruz. ✟

INDIGO dyeing with the “godmother of natural dyes in Guatemala,” Olga Reiche.

Olga is a local legend. After the earthquake in 1976, she partnered with the government to travel throughout the country, interviewing artisans and making sustainability recommendations.

Today, Olga has invested over thirty years experimenting with dyeing techniques and she continues to lead the way in sustainability, utilizing materials like corn husks, plastic bags, cassette tapes, and jeans to create products for her own line of naturally dyed and recycled products.

This week, we were the first official class on the rooftop of her shop in town, Indigo. We learned the basics of shibori-inspired to create patterns with indigo dye and learned how to set up the vat. Thank you, @stela_9 for introducing us to another woman warrior and entrepreneur!

Textile hunting in Chichicastenango, the biggest native market in Central America. Colorful and chaotic, it’s filled with rows of textiles and handicrafts, bustling with life and activity.

I’ve heard of this open-air market for years, and was excited to finally explore it, with @stela_9 showing me the ropes. I’m completely reinspired to make a few fun updates to #ourlittlecasita and grabbed a few extra pieces that I’ll be listing in the online shop.

Spending the week in Antigua, Guatemala for @stela_9’s Artist and Artisan Residency Program. We’re exploring ancient traditions with a hands-on approach, including weaving, indigo dyeing, and leather working.

Expert weavers, Rosaura, Mirza, and Francesca of San Antonio Aguas Calientes launched the week, teaching us the traditional backstrap loom weaving process and techniques.

The first class acts as an introductory course and overview of the textile heritage of Guatemala, which gave all of us a stronger appreciation for the level of detail, intricacies, and patience required to make pieces on the loom.

We each made a wall hanging (with lots of assistance from the experts 😉) and picked up a few new terms and patterns (my favorite was the “mosquito”). Swipe to see how they turned out!
